Your report of the nastiness of the Detroit INS folks sounds accurate. I had absolutely no problem since my employer had experienced immigration problems with them before. They had an immigration lawyer go with me to apply for my VISA in Detroit. I was in and out real fast - but that might not have been the case without the lawyer. As an additional note, a former US employer of mine recommended that I not apply for my VISA in Niagara Falls, New York since they experienced problems with them in the past. On that occasion, I took their advice and applied in Buffalo, New York (by myself). It was a piece of cake!!
