It pains me to see innocent children with such extreme abnormalities. Coming across these I thought to myself that we should take some time out to thank God for the health we have, and pray that no one should have to go through such suffering.


A 2 week old baby with neonatal hyperthyroidism who presented with weight loss and restlessness. Widended palpebral fissures, stare, exophthalmos and periorbital edema are present.

This full term, anancephatic infant expired several hours after delivery. Screening can detect elevated fetoprotein levels which are found in amiotic fluid and maternal serum in the prescence of open neural tube defects. The test should be performed between 15 and 18 weeks of gestation. It should be repeated because 10-25% of women with an initial elevated fetoprotein level are negative on repeat tests.

Vascular tumors make up one specifc class of tumors arising in soft tissue and mucous membrane of the head and neck region. A large proportion of these tumors present as a cervical mass and manifest their clinical effect by expansile growth. They present with an initial proliferation in the first month of life and increase in size from the third to eigth month. They grow during the second year of life and thereafter involution starts until they regress by approximately age seven.
