As you may or may not know, breast cancer affects one in every five females. To prevent this cancer from spreading through the body the breast often has to be removed. This results in major psychological repercusions such as insecurities. By using skin from the stomach, an artificial lookalike can be reconstructed. This first involves creating a cavity where the layer of skin and fat will be molded into.

Then a section of the stomach is separated from the muscle, and a major artery to the skin layer is maintained to provide blood to that chunk of meat. Doctors must be careful to not sever this artery. The other advantage to this operation is that the patient automatically gets a stomach reduction. Permanent surgical clips are used to tie off unused blood vessels.

After the layer of meat is detached, it is then tunneled under the skin into the area where the breast is to be reconstructed.
