Tonight was the fourth installment of the SilvaFug User Group Meeting. There was a good turn out of up to 22-24 in total that showed up. Of course I forgot my digital camera again, and the organizer of SilvaFug (Tom Ortega of eBay) thought that I was going to bring it too... so apologies for yet again, no pics.
The location this time was where my previous job was, eBay's North Campus on 1st St in San Jose at the town hall conference center. Things got off to a late start as we scrambled to get the networking going.
Once that was in gear Ted Patrick (Flex Evangelist, and the guy behind OnFlex.Org and Just AS-MXML) was in a rush and quickly introduced himself, as well as a recruiter from Adobe.
On the recruiting side, Adobe themselves are looking for Flex Developers. A couple of folks from Yahoo were there and mentioned they're looking as well. SilvaFug veterans ESRIA also mentioned that they're always interested in looking at resumes, as well as the folks at RoungPeg. And finally to my surprise, eBay themselves are looking for *4* Flex Developers!
After a round of introductions (bunch of folks from eBay were there since it was hosted at eBay), Tom mentioned something that I dreamed of doing while I was at eBay, and that was to promote Flex @ eBay publicly. He's been able to get the backing from corporate to not only hold monthly training sessions internally to all new hires (and anyone interested), but to hold it publicly so that anyone in the bay area who wants *FREE* Flex training (a 2-3hr intro to Flex) can participate. That's awesome! Mad Props to eBay for that.
And to take things beyond that, Tom has coordinated with RoundPeg so that anyone who wants additional training, RoundPeg will provide a discount program for their Flex training program (Adobe Certified).
The Flash developers from the Yahoo! Maps team then gave a presentation led by Chuck Freedman. Chuck talked about how the Maps technology works, and how easy their JS, AS, and Flex API's are to use, and some interesting mashups people have done. Chuck has a book coming out soon called Yahoo! Maps Mashups that details all the funky ways you can utilize the technology. Of course the #1 question was: Where's the Flex 2/AS3 API!!! No official word on that unfortunately, the team is eager to work on it, but where it sits as a priority remains to be seen.
One interesting set of theme'd maps that use the API is from former Yahoo employee Justin Everett Church (now an Adobe Employee), everyone was blown away by these:

Chuck talked about Yahoo! Hack Day, which sounded so exciting I regret not being there. People got really hard core into it, and the level of innovation going on there sounded incredible.
