General Session

  • Thousands of laptops trying to connect during the session made the network basically useless. Barely good enough for instant messaging.
  • Conference opened up with a spectacular show from the Blue Man Group
  • Kevin Lynch Opening
  • Recap of how the last year went by someone from Adobe (didn’t catch the name)
  • Theme of the conference is going beyond boundaries. Using your existing skills and tools to do more, but turbo charging the tools to integrate all the independent workflows into one continuous and seamless workflow.
    • Ensure that existing workflows are preserved
    • Adobe embraces the Labs concept
    • Kudos to Ben Forta for this tireless quest to promote CF, traveled 3M Miles
    • Northwest sent him a letter wondering why his travel dropped after taking a break to be with family
    • Flash Lite running over 100M devices around the world
  • Recognize that many people, especially in Asia, may not be connected via a PC
  • Recognizing Flex 2.0
  • 100 000 Developers who have downloaded it
  • Flash turned 10 years old, one of the most dominate technologies on the web.
  • 9 Months since Macromedia and Adobe got married
  • Acrobat 8 is key result of that marriage
  • Where do we go from here?
  • Explosion of digital content
  • Digital more engaging experiences. ‘Engagement’ summarizes the strategy
  • The success of Flash (Kevin Lynch)
    • Flash Player 8 adoption way higher than 7
    • Flash Player 9 trending along the Flash 8 adoption rate
    • Flash 9 vs Flash 8 speed comparison (IE… upgrade now!). 20X Speed increase demo’d.
    • Scripting engine much more capable, enabling you to take things to a higher level.
    • Flash Video Momentum. Allows people to do interactive video on their sites, Flash Player 8 the catalyst.
  • Workflows between designers and Developers
  • How to be more productive and efficient?

  • Example workflow by Greg Lewis:
    • Photoshop->Fireworks->Dreamweaver
    • Fireworks can open Photoshop files natively
    • Open Multiple Photoshop files in Fireworks as a collection so that you can make interactive prototype where you can share a navigation layer to jump across each of the pages that you’ve comp’d.
    • Dreamweaver seamlessly recognizes native Photoshop clipboard data. And Vice Versa, changes on the DW side alert Photoshop that image data has been used/modified.
    • AJAX is typically developer centric. Spry Framework created so that Designers and Developers can work together. Where Designers can utilize Spry widgets on the design side.

  • Dynamic Media Workflow (Mike Downey, Steve Kilisky)
    • Focus on the content vs the interface
    • Common interface across all the Creative Suite apps
    • Pallets will be minimizeable
    • Future of release of Flash will be able to import Photoshop files natively. All the layers/masks/etc… of the PSD file are visible within Flash.
    • Photoshop layers can be made into movie clips (named instances in fact).
    • Flash will recognize all the PS filter effects (blend modes, etc…) natively.
    • Adobe After Effects, strong Flash Video support.
    • Releasing a Sound Editing tool called Soundbooth to Labs. Integrates adding audio to your web workflows (via Flash).

  • RIA Workflow (Sho Kuwamoto)
    • Re-Iterate: FLEX IS FREE
    • Designer uses Illustrator to create some new skins, and the graphics are identified with symbols, which you then export as a Flash file. It creates movie clips for each of those symbols.
    • Flex Builder, model the general layout, and then easily import the graphics from Illustrator using CSS.
    • CSS Styles let you easily manage which symbol from Illustrator identify each state (e.g mouse over, off, etc…).
    • Sho built a CF powered fully skinned MP3 Player in 10-12 minutes
    • LAPTOP BATTERY DIED AT THIS POINT

  • Apollo
    • Going by memory at this point…
    • Demo’d an amazing bunch of apps, including an Apollo based instant messenger, and a kick ass eBay tool that makes it super easy to create auctions by taking pics directly from your webcam – THIS IS REAL: http://cgi.ebay.com/Adobe-Apollo-SWAG-MAX-2006_W0QQitemZ110047485596QQihZ001QQcategoryZ21092QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
    • Took the MP3 Player that Sho built in the above, and then converted it to an Apollo app so that it can read in your local itunes library and play those files on local disk.
    • ADOBE HAS A $100M VC fund for those who are interested in Apollo development.

  • Flash Mobile
§ A 2007 Jaguar rolled in and Kevin Lynch demo’d it’s Flash Mobile interface for navigation, etc…
